Increase your self-esteem by using generosity to manage strong feelings (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by using generosity to manage strong feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by using generosity to manage strong feelings:
Altruism is when one’s behaviors and actions are aimed to benefit someone else for that person’s sake rather than for own benefit. It is linked to the golden rule: the principle of treating others as we want to be treated, which is present as an ideal in most religions.
Altruism seems ethical and mentally healthy. Living life by this principle empirically makes often the person more healthy, grateful and wise. But it can also backfire.
Examples:
Examples of altruism is not demanding repayment of a loan or giving away resources thinking that the other person needs them better.
It is also when being extremely helpful to a person we think dislike us or neutralising an argument with kind words and a positive focus.
When a unconscious self-serving motivation is too strong, it may drive us to be altruistic blindly or in irrational ways.
