Increase your self-esteem by understanding the motivations behind feelings (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the motivations behind feelings” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by listening to your feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding the motivations behind feelings:
As mentioned in earlier posts, one of the characteristics of feelings is that they each correspond to behavioural and motivational impulses that are important for our survival and for signaling our human needs to us.
Examples of these impulses are seeking after resources, shelter and support when scared or reaching out for social contacts to share the experience when happy.
Another useful way of thinking about the usage of feelings is grouping them into different kinds of functions.
Panksepp has identified three types of major emotional systems with different functions.
These three systems are based on research on emotions/feelings.
The research has revealed a number of integrated circuits in the brain that give rise to different types of emotions/feelings that are connected to at least three specific motivational patterns. More about this in the next post.
