Increase your self-esteem by understanding others impact on you – projective identification (1 minute read)

This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding others impact on you – projective identification) continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.

Increase your self-esteem by understanding others impact on you:

Projective identification is an immature defense mechanism. It is when one person’s feelings or anxiety are transferred into another person. This may be felt as either good or bad.

It is a very primitive form of relating often used by children, even if we all sometimes use it.

The receiver feels as one with the other person. They share a delusional state. For example, a little baby cannot talk but can make the parent feel the same feeling.

Knowing that we might be feeling other person’s feelings helps us take things less personally and resist acting out.

Projective identification can also happen when a person has difficulties owning own positive qualities and assets due to many types of fears: fear of envy, being abandoned or harming someone.

To counter this, it is very important to trust oneself and be clear about who is responsible for what.

For example: A manager might not know everything. Maybe the ‘incompetent’ employee contributes.

Or the scorned spouse should take a look at each person’s contribution to an ongoing problem since both may be partly responsible.
