Increase your self-esteem by understanding mature handling of unknown feelings and anxiety (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding mature handling of unknown feelings and anxiety” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding mature handling of feelings and anxiety:
The last two posts were about using fantasies as a defense mechanism and that they can be both immature and mature depending on why we use them, how we use them and for how long we use them.
This is also how defense mechanisms are divided into groups. This is similar to the grouping done by the psychiatrist Vaillant:
Level I: Psychotic defenses. This type of defense is about escaping from reality without knowing it.
Level II: Immature defenses: This type of defense annoys people around but comforts the user of the defense mechanism
Level III: Intermediate (neurotic) defenses: This type of defense causes the user of the defense mechanism more discomfort than the observer
Level IV: Mature (empathic) defenses. This type of defense mechanism leads to a more optimal adaptation when handling stressors. These defenses typically maximize satisfaction and allow the user to be aware of feelings, thoughts and their consequences. They also entail an optimal balance among conflicting motives.
