Increase your self-esteem by understanding how unhealthy shame is developed:
This post continues on the last posts’ different aspects of shame and how to be free from too much and harsh shame.
If harmful shame is a common feeling in your life, you can try the 5 steps from Compassion Focused Therapy, CFT, created by the psychologist Paul Gilbert.
Step 1 – Discover human nature by reflecting on:
-Shame is a natural part of being human
-We need shame to help us adapt to our living situations
-There are reasons for you having developed problems with shame
-Problematic shame is often developed already at a young age
-The exaggerated shame was likely a way of trying to adapt to your life circumstances at that time, such as having harsh, cold parents or being bullied
-Suffering and uncomfortable feelings are parts of life that we cannot escape from but learn how to manage
-shame is a primary feeling that has to be moderated to be helpful
