Increase your self-esteem by understanding how shame was helpful during childhood (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding how shame was helpful during childhood” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by listening to your feelings and heal self-destructive shame.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding how shame was helpful during childhood:
The last posts have been about the first 3 steps of the 5 steps based on Compassion Focused Therapy, CFT, aiming to heal the negative injuries of too much self-critical shame.
Step 1 – Discover human nature by understanding the links among current personal problems and shame to earlier life circumstances when the development of excessive shame was an adaptive and helpful response to avoid being alienated from close ones.
Step – 2 Connect to your past: Go through difficult situations and childhood memories to understand how you came to develop too much self-critical shame.
Step 3 – Connect to your current situation: Understand how your current thinking patterns developed earlier in life now have become maladaptive by analysing your current problems and the illusionary nature of thoughts.
Step 4:
Step 4 is about understanding the emotional and motivational systems of humans, see later post, as well as their connection to shame:
-inner and outer shame
-how shame feels in the body
-how to give oneself loving self-compassion and validation.
More about shame and what to do about shame in upcoming posts.
