Autistic fantasy is an immature defense mechanism where a person deals with emotional conflict and stressors by escaping into daydreaming and an inner fantasy world as a substitute for problem solving of the current situation.
Although daydreaming can be a normal and healthy activity, autistic fantasy substitutes daydreaming to an extreme degree and can result in difficulties in handling daily life.
It is a method for coping with stress. It may replace real healthy social interactions and behaviors with fantasies and daydreams.
For example:
Students who are bullied at school may retreat into a fantasy world based on their favorite movie or book. They spend their time in this fantasy world and may therefore get problems connected to social withdrawal.
