This post “Increase your self-esteem by identifying your coping strategies for managing strong feelings and anxiety” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by managing your thoughts and feelings.
Identify your coping strategies for managing strong feelings and anxiety:
The tricky thing with defense mechanisms is that they are difficult to identify.
Since they are largely outside of awareness it is difficult for us to identify our own preferable defense mechanisms.
Also, we often fail to recognize the defense mechanisms others use.
To identify a defense mechanism, an objective observer needs to know:
- History: Childhood experiences and possible traumas: both personal truth and more objective facts
- Present: Behaviors, bodily symptoms as well as expressed emotions and views
Next time you wonder about own or other’s defensive behaviors, expressed feelings and thoughts you can ask yourself:
- is this response reasonable
- is the response proportionate
- is the person denying any aspects, moderating the intensity or accepting and potentially redirecting the response
- to what extent is the response based on objective reality, i.e. is shared by several participants and observers
