Increase your self-esteem by understanding the threat system (1 minute read)
This post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding the threat system” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by listening to your feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding the threat system:
As mentioned in earlier posts, one of the characteristics of feelings is that they each correspond to behavioural and motivational impulses that are important for our survival and for signaling our human needs to us.
Panksepp has identified three types of major emotional systems with different functions. These three systems are based on research on emotions/feelings.
The first system – The threat and self-protection system:
The threat and self-protection system aims to detect and respond to threats, e.g. fight, flight, freeze or other coping efforts as reactions to handle dangers.
This system is considered to be the dominating system. This means that this system is getting first priority over the other two systems and close them down when active. The reason for this is that its main focus is on physical and psychological survival, giving bursts of symptoms and emotions such as anxiety, fear, anger and disgust. Hence, survival has the main priority and shuts down the two other systems that focus on the less crucial but pleasant motivations exploration and recovery.
