Increase your self-esteem by debating with your inner critic:

One way of reducing self-critical shame is to become more self-compassionate.

An exercise that can help you in breaking free from unhealthy shame is talking to an empathetic person or a therapist about shameful situations:

-What triggers shame, for example: “I did something wrong”

-What the inner critic says: “Idiot. Another proof. Everybody thinks you are stupid!”

-Your positive traits which contradict what the inner critic claims: “I am kind, hardworking, responsible, precise and good at problem solving”

-Potential objections that in turn can arise from the critic: “Those traits are not true all the time. Look what just happened… Remember those times when you were not…”

Your answer: “Well, since I have shown those traits often, they are true, but sometimes I have to prioritize differently. Sometimes I cannot control all aspects of an event. I am ok and always try my best and that is enough.”
