Increase your self-esteem by understanding unhealthy shame (1 minute read)
Here, the post “Increase your self-esteem by understanding unhealthy shame” continues with how you can increase your self-esteem by understanding your feelings.
Increase your self-esteem by understanding unhealthy shame:
This post continues with how to manage disproportionate and painful shame by using Compassion Focused Therapy developed by the British psychologist Paul Gilbert.
This therapy emphasizes the importance of using compassion for oneself, close ones and strangers. It relieves intrusive feelings of shame and self-criticism with the aim to live a healthy and happy life.
Often the cause for this is traumatic childhood events, which in turn create central threats and fears of being devalued and excluded.
This can in turn lead to activation of safety behaviors and avoidances, for example:
-focus on being self-sufficient
-not trusting others
-rejecting others in order not to risk being rejected
-keeping distance
-interpreting events as being personally inferior = shame
This can create other unintended consequences such as:
-excessive performance drive
-self-criticism
-loneliness
-lack of closeness
-excessive care of others
-isolation
-comfort-eating
which causes more suffering.
More about shame and what to do about it in upcoming posts.
