Increase your self-esteem by using anticipation to manage strong feelings and thoughts:
The coming posts end the summary of defense mechanisms by going through the mature defense mechanisms that are healthy to use as coping mechanisms when being overwhelmed by feelings and thoughts.
Anticipation is managing a potentially stressful event by mentally prepare for and plan for it as a way to reduce anxiety and stress.
Anticipation can involve rehearsing possible outcomes in one’s mind. This also makes it possible to develop plans to manage all the scenarios:
-worst possible scenario – daring to think through and consider the worst possible outcome, including telling oneself that it will not be as bad as one imagined.
-best possible scenario – what would be the ideal outcome if everything went smoothly.
Anticipation includes reminding oneself among other things that that the discomfort will be over in few minutes, that one has experienced similar situations before and survived, that future pain will be manageable.
