Increase your self-esteem by understanding how feelings can become opposite – Reversal
Reversal is an immature defense mechanism described already by Freud. It includes transforming something into its opposite. For Freud it was about turning love into hate and hate into love. For example when someone is becoming friendly with an aggressor. An example is the Stockholm syndrome where the hostages became allied with the robbers and some even fell in love.
Another example is a person who feels passive in a painful situation can reverse it and become active in the situation. As when someone who is bullied starts bullying someone else.
Or when starting to hate a loved person when not getting sufficient response from that person.
It can also be turning something passive into something active. This includes blaming someone else for own actions: “He started it…”
